Home Care Employee at
McLean Care Community, Tamworth NSW
My role is providing help and assistance with personal care, housekeeping, welfare around the home including helping with meals, shopping, cleaning and transport.
I have worked in Aged Care for eighteen years. Seven years at McAuley Hostel, Gunnedah, NSW and eleven years at McLean Care Community, Tamworth, NSW
I have always loved caring for people. I cared for my mother who had supranuclear palsy and my father who had dementia, living independently on the family farm for 8 years. They had a wonderful, supportive family, however, eventually, both moved into a nursing home. It was during this time, I began my study in Aged Care and I knew this was where my future would be.
Every day, I remind myself of McLean Care’s core values; Respect, Compassion, Integrity, Courage, Reliability and Resilience. This helps me carry out my job as a Home Care Employee and to reach out to the clients and make a positive difference to someone’s life every time.
I believe the qualities that are important to have as a Carer in Aged Care, include reliability and punctuality, honesty, friendliness, patience and the ability to listen and communicate well. As experience as a Carer increases, you also grow to appreciate how important it is to respect a person’s individuality and the ability to be discrete or sensitive which develops a sense of trust. It helps to think of it as “walking in their shoes”.
Caring for people as individuals in their home gives me great sense of satisfaction that I am providing a valuable service to the community and making a positive difference to someone’s life, so they can stay in their own home for as long as possible.
The clients are so grateful for the services and assistance they receive. When you leave a client’s home after providing a care service, they have a beautiful smile on their face and say “thank you” for a job well done.
